Learning Citizenship: Practical Teaching Strategies

Last year we produced a book based on case studies which developed from school visits around the country and the different approaches to teaching Citizenship. The book, Learning Citizenship: Practical Teaching Strategies for Secondary Schools is now on sale through all good bookshops.

Citizenship across the curriculum

In lots of schools, many subjects across the curriculum are expected to make their contribution to Citizenship. The Nuffield Citizenship website is building a range of materials to help. It aims to offer one activity per year for each subject.

We now have units for Maths, Geography, History, PE, Science and Business and Economics. We have just added some units on English.

The resources that appear here have been developed by teachers and used in their classrooms. They aim to achieve the requirement of making the Citizenship content quite explicit as well as offering the three strands knowledge, skills and participation.

Futures Seminar

The Nuffield Foundation and the Association for Citizenship Teaching joined forces recently to hold a seminar which aimed to explore the future of Citizenship. Teachers, advisers, representatives of QCA, the DfES, the HMI responsible for Citizenship and many others met to discuss a range of issues.

The seminar was timely because there are many issues relating to Citizenship that are under discussion including the nature of the subject. Should it include Britishness and British social and cultural history? What will full course GCSE and an AS and A2 look like? How will the KS3 and KS4 programmes of study develop?

A report based on the event is now available.
