Learning Citizenship: Practical Teaching Strategies
Last year we produced a book based on case studies which developed from school visits around the country and the different approaches to teaching Citizenship. The book, Learning Citizenship: Practical Teaching Strategies for Secondary Schools is now on sale through all good bookshops.

The new curriculum for Citizenship introduced ethics for the first time. Schools are expected to roll out this new approach from September 2008 so ACT and the Nuffield foundation drew together a group of teachers, advisors and leading figures from the world of Citizenship to discuss the implications for schools, teachers and students.
In the context of new approaches to the curriculum, values and ethics in Citizenship can permeate the curriculum. The subject is likely to contribute to the cross curricular work that is being encouraged by QCA in order to help students see the relationship between different areas of the curriculum. A clear understanding of the meaning of values and ethics in this context is therefore imperative if the opportunity is to be maximised.
The seminar explored the impact of values and ethics through Citizenship on students, schools and teacher training.

In lots of schools, many subjects across the curriculum are expected to make their contribution to Citizenship. The Nuffield Citizenship website is building a range of materials to help. It aims to offer one activity per year for each subject.
We now have units for Maths, Geography, History, PE, Science and Business and Economics. We have just added some units on English.
The resources that appear here have been developed by teachers and used in their classrooms. They aim to achieve the requirement of making the Citizenship content quite explicit as well as offering the three strands knowledge, skills and participation.
