Education for Citizenship at the Nuffield Foundation is looking at ways of guiding the non-specialist teacher in appropriate strategies for citizenship. As it is a subject that often does not have ‘right’ answers, discussion, debate, group work, investigation and a range of other techniques are going to be needed in the classroom.

This academic year we are continuing to work with groups of subject teachers to produce useful lessons which will help teachers to bring out the Citizenship aspect of their subject. See Citizenship across the curriculum to find out more.

Learning Citizenship
Last year we produced a book based on case studies which developed from school visits around the country and the different approaches to teaching Citizenship. The book, Learning Citizenship: Practical Teaching Strategies for Secondary Schools is now on sale through all good bookshops. Read all about it!

In 2003 we looked at producing materials, and in fact came up with a unit of work called The Campaign. This was planned to be taught over a period of 6-8 weeks, 1 hour per week. If you would like to make use of these materials, we have now put them on this website, free to download. Read on.

We have also looked at some of the free resources that are available for teaching Citizenship, and have asked classroom teachers to review them. The resulting reviews can be seen in the Reviews of resources section.
