Citizenship in Maths at Tunbridge Wells Boys Grammar School

At Tunbridge Wells Boys Grammar School the Citizenship co-ordinator asked departments to develop a module for KS3. It could be offered in Year 7, 8 or 9 and had to meet the criteria for the department's own subject and Citizenship.

The Maths department decided to combine Ma4 Handling Data - with the Citizenship requirement for students to understand:

the diversity of national, regional, religious and ethnic identities in the United Kingdom and the need for mutual respect and understanding.

The students were provided with a range of data about the UK population. They worked in groups to graph aspects that interested them and discussed who would find the data useful. This drew them into further discussion on aspects of the way the government runs the country.

Many were surprised to discover that less than 10% of the population come from ethnic minorities. Estimates ranged from 30% to 50%.

They shared their findings and ideas and made posters to present their work.

You can find out more about this case study and many others in Learning Citizenship: practical teaching strategies for secondary schools'. It will be published by RoutledgeFalmer in the early autumn.
