Chocoholics The Lesson

The lesson has four sections. Students work in teams of about four.

  • Resource 1 - What product sets the scene. A group of students are planning a mini-enterprise activity and have decided to make chocolate crisp slices but have worked out that they will cost more to produce than the price that people will be prepared to pay. This introduces the basic ideas of costs and revenues. The resource sheet asks some questions which guide them to an understanding of costs, revenue and profit as well as thinking about why some products add more value than others in other words they provide more profit relative to costs than others.
  • Resource 2 - A better plan shows why the group of students decide to make boxes of chocolates instead of chocolate crisps. It asks students in the class to work out why this is more successful.
  • Resource 3 - Make you own box gives some parameters for the box and suggests that students carry out some research in the class to work out the type of box they'd like most. If time is short, they can simply use the evidence on provided on the resource sheet and be creative. They therefore need to come up with a short list of questions which will give them some guidance on producing their box. They will need card, wrapping paper, glue and scissors to make their own boxes.
  • Resource 4 - How Competitive? Is the basis for the debrief. Students are asked to evaluate their own product and others.

From the resulting discussion they develop an understanding of:

  • the importance of the use of resources including time;
  • why some products add more value than others;
  • the idea that there is a relationship between the amount that people are prepared to pay for a product and the willingness of a business to produce it;
  • the connections with their own purchasing decisions. Famous name manufacturers can charge higher prices because purchasers are prepared to pay more for the brand name.
