Levellers: Rationale

Rationale

This series of two lessons is best taught as the conclusion to a sequence of learning on the causes and consequences of the 17th century civil wars (1642 -1651). It explores the links between rights, as laid down by the Levellers with those of the French Revolution and the UN Declaration of Human Rights.

Students should appreciate, as a result, that the ideas are not new but have developed over many centuries. The final activity asks students to identify ways in which people are deprived of their human rights today.
