Citizenship through Business Studies

Business Studies teachers have a lot to offer Citizenship. There are many aspects of the programme of study which are part of a GCSE Business course. There are likely to be few people in school who can deal effectively with how the economy functions, including the role of business apart from members of the Business Studies department. The expectation is that by the age of 16 all students will have some degree of understanding of the inter-relationships of people, businesses and their role in the economy.

Dealing with controversial issues is the other key contribution to be made to Citizenship. A Business Studies specification is full of them and the expertise that has been developed is definitely relevant in this context. The stakeholder model, for example, can be used in many contexts as a way of looking at different people's points of view. Young people often have great difficulty in standing in other people's shoes and there is plenty of opportunity to help.

The website will provide a range of activities that can be used either in Business Studies lessons or, because not all students have access to the subject, in the Citizenship/ PSHE programme.
