History: Child labour lesson

Starter

Children Talking about Child Labour, a video from Save the Children can be used in Lesson 1 to set the scene but if this is not available, the short pieces showing different perspectives on the subject make a good starting point.

Core of the lesson

If using the video, there is a worksheet for students to complete while watching. Resource 1 provides a worksheet for students to compete while watching the video and questions to focus group discussion after the video. The outcomes can be gathered together in a short feedback session which aims to identify the problems of child labour and those associated with boycotts and bans.

Resources 2a and 2b provide a range of perspectives about the issue. Depending on the time available and the students concerned, the items of evidence can be given out to groups either individually or together. If being used singly each group can report back on how the example impacts on child labour. The class as a whole can then come up with a strategy for dealing with the problem. Resource 3 will help with this process.

If groups are working on all the evidence, once they have considered the implications, they can be asked to come up with a strategy with the help of Resource 3. They can then report their strategies to the rest of the class.

The plenary

How can students have an effect?
Resource 3 gives a list of suggestions for action. Participation plays a key role in Citizenship so students should be encouraged to do something active. Ideally, the whole class will agree on a joint course of action. The fund raising activity may involve wider publicity across the whole school.
