Levellers Lesson 2
How up to date was the Levellers' Agreement of the People?
The second lesson develops the idea of rights and asks students to consider the rights that they think people should have and compare them with the Agreement of the People and the UN Declaration of Human Rights

picture of levellers Different groups compare Agreement of the People with The Rights of Man and the UN Declaration of Human Rights. The three are of different degrees of difficulty and therefore provide a challenge for groups of differing attainment levels.
Some groups looks at the Agreement of the People and the Rights of Man. Other groups takes the Rights of Man and the UN Declaration of Human Rights.
Each group highlights the common features in each.
Groups who can deal with more challenging material looks at the Agreement of the People, the Rights of Man and the UN declaration of Human Rights. They highlight the items that are common to all in one colour, and items drawn from either one or the other in different colours.
If ICT facilities are available the ideas can be drawn together effectively and the relationships between the document shown clearly on an interactive whiteboard or with a laptop and projector.

The White House on Capitol Hill Offer the groups some current newspapers, a video of a news broadcast or clips from the BBC news website. Ask them to identify breaches of rights.
Draw up a table from their examples to show the right that has been broken and how it has happened.
Discuss how individuals, groups or society can be involved in helping to protect people.
Links to organisations including Amnesty can help this discussion.
