Maths: Data Handling: the UK population L1

Lesson 1

Starter

Gather data

1. How many of you have school dinners, bring a packed lunch, go out, go home? (Adapt according to options available in school).
2. How many of you play football, rugby, netball, tennis, cricket, gymnastics or fitness? (Adapt to what ever is available in school or students suggestions).

Main activity

Students draw a pie chart of the dinner options and a bar chart of the sports options.

Plenary

Discuss why different types of graph are used to show different data.

Students think about type of graph to show

  • the primary schools they came from
  • the leisure activities they enjoy.

Work out who might find this data useful.

Homework
