Maths: Data Handling: the UK population L2
Lesson 2
Starter
In light of previous lesson and homework, define the factors that makes each type of graph appropriate for different types of data.
Main activity
This activity can be either paper based or ICT based. Some resources are available as Excel spreadsheets as well as in word document format.
Students work in groups with sets of data. (See the Downloads below for Resouces 2-5.) Together they work out a question that they think the data can answer. Each group develops a 5 minute presentation based on the question, answering:
- how does the data helps to answer the question?
- why they have chosen each type of graph for their data sets?
- what other data they might like to help build an answer?
- who do they think the data would be useful to?
If there is time and they have access to the internet or intranet, they could search for additional data or use Social Trends, Regional Trends, Neighbourhood Data etc. which can all be downloaded from www.statistics.gov.uk
Plenary
Discussion of issues resulting from work so far and any issues to be raised before groups present finding to the class in the next lesson.
