PE and the Media – Lesson

Starter

Brainstorm the topic.

Suggestions:

– Should we spend £millions on the Olympics?

– Should performance enhancing drugs be allowed in sport?

– Should children undergo intensive training from an early age?

– Does sport unite or divide?

It is better to choose an issue which is controversial rather than one which is hard to argue against.

Main activity

Students work in groups to work out arguments for and against the question.

They present their work in PowerPoint or in poster form.

If they use PowerPoint, limit the number of screens to 5 to focus their thoughts.

Plenary

Students present their arguments to each other and everyone gathers all the points on each side of the argument.

The whole class votes to decide a common view on the issue.

Follow up

The topic might be the basis for an assembly. Groups of students present the case for and against and the students in the assembly vote on the issue.
