The Present Takers – Bullying – Rationale

Rationale and National Curriculum references

Rationale

The lessons here are loosely planned and informal in style so as to encourage free discussion. Students are to be encouraged to learn about … (bullying and its surrounding issues) rather than to learn from … (teachers or texts). The fiction text used here is used only as a ‘springboard’ and may or may not be read from start to finish as time or level of ability allows. Important extracts are given under resources after the lessons themselves.

It is important that the links with other influential individuals are genuinely made in order to instil a sense of empowerment in the students. Therefore, wherever possible, the letters written in lesson five should be sent to their addressee and if possible, students should be allowed to deliver their presentation (from lesson six) to a senior member of staff or to a representative of the student council/forum (if applicable).

Lessons where the aim is to complete work started in previous sessions have not been given in this scheme, due to the fact that each individual class will require a different amount of time to complete tasks.

Learning Objectives

  • To teach students that bullying has far-reaching effects which extend beyond school into the adult and political world.
  • To encourage students to see bullying as a problem for each individual involved with it.
  • To allow students to develop their empathy skills in order to see the problem of bullying from multiple and unusual perspectives.
  • To give students an opportunity to create and discuss possible solutions to social problems.
  • To give students a sense of empowerment through opportunities for their ideas to be heard.
