War memorials: Introduction

Every town and village has a war memorial. They provide an interesting source of evidence for the history of WW1. This series of lessons is based on the memorial in Cottenham, Cambridgeshire and can easily be transferred to your own locality. Taking the class to the memorial is the best strategy but if this is challenging, take lots of close up digital pictures so your students can see the detail.

  • Can the experiences of local people really tell us about the significance of WWI?
