Y7 Football Lesson 2

Teaching Citizenship through Physical Education, Year 7 Football, Lesson 2

One hour duration

a Warm Up - 10 minutes
Headball (trust, respect): Y7 footballl Lesson 2

Use the Numbers Game to get the class into random pairings. The class get as quickly as possible into groups consisting of the number called out by the teacher.
(ie. call 5! To get groups of 5, then 6! 3! ending with 2! To get pairs). Each pair uses one ball. The ball is balanced between their foreheads with each arm on the partner’s shoulder. Each pair has to go around a course without dropping the ball. This can be adapted into relay races.

b Technical phase - 20 minutes.
Tricks of the Trade (inclusion, respect, responsibility):
Pupils work in pairs (change the pairings frequently and randomly to encourage social mixing) with one ball between two. The teacher teaches a variety of dribbling and turning skills to them all (e.g. Step over, Drag back, Inside/Outside Hook, Cruyff). The pupils are then invited to show their own tricks and teach them to the class. In their pairs pupils teach reciprocally offering demonstrations and advice to each other. Observe for able pupils helping less able pupils.

  • Ball Tag*: ( trust, responsibility, equity):
Each pair will need a 10x10 yard square to work in and a ball each. Whilst both in possession of the ball, one player evades the other pursuing player. Change roles after 2 minutes and count the number of tags achieved. Ask the pupils to work with other pupils of equal ability. The teacher observes for incidents of cheating and fair play being ready to ‘bank’ them to discuss later.

c Game phase - 20 minutes
Fair Game!(equity, inclusion, respect, responsibility):
The teacher gives the class autonomy to organise two equitable teams of 9. They must organise rolling substitutions every 5 minutes so that each player has equal playing time. They must organise their team formation and offer each pupil a chance to play in at least two different positions. Get the teams to end with a Rugby-style tunnel where they applaud their opponents off.

d Cool Down - 10 minutes
Teacher initiated but pupil-centred reflection on teachable moments:
Teacher highlights examples of positive behaviour from a variety of pupils in terms of the chosen values e.g. Observe for a pupil who prefers co-operation and fair play to conflict, and influences others towards this approach. Try to choose at least one example from each of the five values. Ask each team to arrive next week with a set of 5 fair play rules that their team agrees to follow eg. Collect the ball yourself when you kick it out of play or end every game by shaking everyone’s hand.
