These three lessons aim to promote the values of trust, respect, inclusion, equity and responsibility while helping students to acquire and develop a variety of football skills.

Lesson 1

One hour duration

a Warm Up - 10 minutes Y7 football warm up
Butt Stops (trust game):
In pairs. Pupil A stands 5 yards away from Pupil B with their back to B in the ‘toilet position’. Pupil B rolls the football by hand towards A and calls out ‘sit!’ when the ball arrives underneath A. Roles are reversed and partners changed.

b Technical phase - 20 minutes.
Team challenges. Juggling (respect, inclusion, equity, trust):
In teams of 4 (equal ability chosen by the pupils) the pupils in turn juggle the ball with any part of the body except their hands/arms until it drops. Once it drops the ball is passed over to another team member. A team score is recorded after 3 minutes. Repeat the exercise allowing low-scoring individuals a bounce between juggles.

Squirrels (trust, responsibility, respect):
In the same teams of 4 each team has to, one at a time relay style, attempt to dribble a ball back to their base corner from the middle of the square and then attempt to steal the opposing teams’ balls from their respective corners. The winning team is that which has the most balls at the time limit (3 minutes). You might repeat the game but insist on no cheating the second time around!

c. Game phase - 20 minutes
Champions League four team tournament:
Pupils select their own equitable teams by discussion (equity and inclusion). Start each game with a Champions League style handshake line (respect). Two refs: one person from each team nominated to make refereeing decisions (responsibility). Name the teams after top European clubs and play semi-finals, final and third place play-off on two pitches. Observe for pupil behaviour at the conclusion of each game (respect).

d. Cool Down - 10 minutes
Teacher-led introduction to teachable moments:
Teacher highlights examples of positive behaviour from a variety of pupils in terms of the chosen values e.g. Observe for a pupil who puts other players in front of themselves especially if they are a strong player. Try to choose at least one example from each of the five values.
