Geography: Housing

This unit is aimed at Year 9 students.

The housing market and planning issues are significant aspects of living in the UK today and are therefore significant areas for students to engage with through Geography and Citizenship. Geography education emphasises the significance of place and the interconnected nature of these places. The housing and planning issues that arise in one place are influenced by and influence the housing and planning issues in another.

Thinking geographically engages students with critical and informed thinking about such issues, rather than the passive acceptance of a description of the status quo. This approach enables students to develop insights into complex issues. The emphasis on planning within this unit is significant. It is an example of how students can rehearse in the classroom, abilities and attributes that they can draw on outside.

This unit is based on using the Royal Town Planning Institute's (RTPI) Education for Sustainable Development A Manual for Schools (2004). It is downloadable from here.
