To vote or not to vote – Introduction
This series of lessons is intended to allow students to investigate for themselves the ideas listed below and to consider the importance of voting in a democracy whilst completing a GCSE Speaking and Listening assessment under the triplet, discuss, argue, persuade.
The lesson’s aims:
- to encourage students to think about their rights and responsibilities associated with voting as they approach the age of majority;
- to provide a forum to discuss the ideas of democracy and dictatorship;
- to allow discussion of British voting trends;
- to teach students about the history of voting in Great Britain;
- to develop research skills;
- to develop oral skills and provide a GCSE Speaking and Listening assessment grade;
- to provide practice in ICT skills in Excel and PowerPoint.
The lessons are recommended for Years 9, 10 or 11 classes of all abilities.
